Quadratic Equation Solver

Solve quadratic equations with real or complex roots, including linear and degenerate cases, directly in your browser.

Solve ax² + bx + c = 0

Enter the three real coefficients. The solver reports the discriminant and both roots, including complex conjugate roots when the discriminant is negative. Load the sample to solve x² − 3x + 2 = 0.

Linear and special cases

When a is zero, the equation becomes linear. If both a and b are zero, c determines whether every value is a solution or there is no solution.

Precision and limits

Decimal and scientific notation are accepted. Nonzero coefficient magnitudes must be between 1e-100 and 1e100. Calculations use browser floating-point arithmetic and display up to 12 significant digits. Nearly repeated roots can be affected by rounding. A numerically stable formula reduces cancellation for distinct real roots. Inputs stay in this tab.
